Despite Poverty, Kisayip Residents Give Happily

Sleep does not come easily each night. Not because my body isn't physically drained, but because my mind won't turn off! Pharmaceutical dreams are my only hope of a good night's rest. Thank you, makers of Ambien!

The things that keep me awake most nights are the pictures. I've taken many photographs, but the pictures I see are the unforgettable moments that are captured with the senses: a joy-filled song and dance as the church members gave the little they had into the offering basket is the closest
thing I've ever seen to the biblical definition of "giving happily;” a dark -skinned toddler seriously studying and exploring the pale skin of my hand with his dark fingers.  I saw fresh, clear water coming out of a bore hole for the first time. The well was surrounded by the excited villagers and they celebrated with yet more song, prayers of thanksgiving, cupping their hands, and filling every imaginable container (including plastic bags) with the fresh, cool water.

Most of all, it's the people I see. It is almost impossible not to fall in love with them. They are beautiful, friendly and as colorful as their clothing. Villagers may be timid of these fair-skinned visitors at first, but it takes very little-- a smile, a wave, a quiet little "sanu" (hello) and the smile that erupts is
genuine and welcoming.

We've just said "Sanu" and already the thought of saying "goodbye" at the end of the week catches at my heart.
