In late February 2011, the first batch of 202 two-week old chickens became residents of the The Chicken House, an SSE poultry business. Under the watchful eye and diligent care of Solomon and Kenneth, the chickens were due to stay for 6 weeks before they would be ready for market.
Solomon and Kenneth are two young men from the village of Kisayhip, Plateau State, Nigeria. Solomon is a 25-year-old high school graduate who is married with a daughter and another child on the way. He also serves as the groundskeeper and day watchman at the Oasis House on the SSE property. Kenneth is also a high school graduate, who still lives with his grandparents in the village. His parents are late.
These two young men really took on the challenge of raising the chickens and were very thankful for the opportunity. Each was paid a small salary, but most of their compensation came from the incentive program they agreed to at the outset of the project. By the end of the six weeks, both expressed interest in starting their own poultry business someday. For now they are content to learn all they can by working for SSE. This is one of the objectives of running small businesses here, to help those involved learn, grow, and dream.
Another objective of operating small businesses here is to provide on-going funding to support other ministry objectives. While SSE did not make much with the first batch of chickens, we made enough to reinvest in another batch and grow the number of chickens to 250.
Thank you to those who donated the seed money to invest in the poultry business. You provided an opportunity for two excellent young men and your investment is about to roll over and grow. As The Chicken House grows it will provide more jobs and funds for other programs in the areas of education, healthcare, and small business. You may never know how many lives are transformed emotionally, physically, and spiritually because of your investment in chickens!
